Metal & Fiberglass-Roof Care

Metal and Fiberglass-Roof Care

One-piece roofs generally do not leak.  However, the seams and seals around the vents and accessories can leak if they are not sealed right, using proper materials.  Never coat the entire roof surface with a sealing material; repair only the seams in areas where accessories are installed.

Before making any repairs, scrape off any old material and clean the area with a good solvent.  In most cases, the thinner elastomeric sealers will work best since they can find their way into small cracks and holes.  The thicker material, usually formulated with alkyd fibers, should only be used when attempting to fill large holes, creases, or bows in the roof.

When installing new roof vents, holding tank vents, or other accessories, use a good lap sealer over the screw heads and around the seams.

Caution: Do not use silicone on the roof.
