Troubleshooting: Atwood Fifth Wheel Landing Gear

Problem
Possible Cause
Correction

Difficult to crank

Dry bevel gears
Dirt in gears
Broken teeth on bevels
Too much hitch weight

Grease gears
Clean and grease gears
Replace gears
Verify weight and determine if
adequate rated leg is installed

Jack leg seized or not working properly

Seized or stripped nut
Stripped or worn worm gear
Obstruction in bevel gears

Dirty inner ram tube

Bent inner ram tube

Vertical gear box
Too much hitch weight

Replace leg
Replace leg
Remove obstruction and grease
gears
Clean ram tube and coat with a
light coat of silicon spray
Replace leg and ensure vertical
position
Replace gear box
Verify weight and determine if
adequate rated leg is installed

Motor will not operate

No or low voltage


Blown fuse
Loose or disconnected wires at
on/off switch
Faulty on/off switch
Faulty motor
No or poor ground

Check battery and electrical
connection; must have min. of 10
volts DC
Replace with 10-amp AWG fuse
Secure wire connection

Replace switch
Replace motor
Re-establish good ground

Motor clutch engages

Normal if leg is at fully extended
or retracted position
Faulty clutch

None. Let go of switch when you
hear the clutch
Replace motor
