    Local Focus: Thunder Bay

    By: Jordan Brandes

When living on the road, it can be easy to live off of franchise chains and overlook the local businesses that give communities their flavor. This is especially true in smaller communities like Thunder Bay, ON in Canada. With a population of just over 100,000 the city depends on small businesses to survive.

With lush forests and an economy based on medical research and education the town is the perfect place to visit if you are looking for a little serenity. Below you will find our favorite local businesses in the area.

    The Kitchen Nook

Located at the heart of Thunder Bay’s historic Bay and Algoma business district, The Kitchen Nook/Finnish Bookstore offers new innovative kitchenware as well as all the basics to keep your kitchen running smoothly. From pots and pans to cutlery, wine accessories to soda makers, bakeware to giftware.

    Caryll’s Yarns

Created by Caryll Donaldson the store contains an all wool inventory and knitting supplies for all your project needs. The store was created to service both the casual knitter and those that live and breath the art of yarn. Donaldson also offers knitting classes on Tuesday nights for first time yarners.

    Lakehead Models

Lakehead Models is the go-to shop for model makers of all ages. With a selection of everything from model trains to airplanes there is a bit of everything available at the model shop. The store itself is run by people passionate about model making and can help you with any problem you may have or find an obscure model for your collection. The staff is also happy to introduce you to the joys of model making so don’t be afraid to ask.

    Chaltrek Geological Supplies

Founded in 1986 and operated in Thunder Bay ever since, Chaltrek is a major supplier for professional field workers in the geology and forestry industries, mining companies and government. From camping, hiking, paddling, skijoring and snowshoeing to prospecting, line cutting, surveying and camp set ups, you can find all your outdoor needs at the store.

    Country Fresh Meats & Deli

The Country Fresh meat market represents a return to the local, neighborhood owned butcher shops of yesteryear. Proud local owners Suzanne Sgambelluri and Jim Cousins have been in the meat and deli business for over 20 years. Their commitment to providing superior products and unsurpassed service has quickly made them a leader in the industry.

Their product range is extensive and includes all cuts of beef, veal, pork, chicken, turkey, lamb and duck. As well as unusual items such as ostrich, kangaroo, alligator and crocodile. They also make fresh store made sausages and have imported ethnic items. With such an eclectic selection it should be a must-see for foodies on the road. Stock up on eclectic meats that will last you in your RV for months to come.
